Pipkins The Help People
Print Size 57cm x 49cm £155 Limited Edition 395
Print Size approx A3 £45. Open Edition
This painting was based on the 1970’s kids TV show Pipkins. I love the retro colours.
Left to right is Tom (alias Jonathan Kydd), Then Hartley Hare, Pig and Tortoise. Hartley was performed by Nigel Plaskitt and Heather Tobias played Pig. Nigel also played Tortoise.
Pipkins ran for nine years. Tom was one of three ‘human’ presenters.
It was filmed in studio B at ATV Elstree, now BBC Elstree. Eastenders now uses the studio.

This painting depicts a day in the life of a commercial shoot for PG Tips. It’s all of us hard at work. I made the Monkey puppets and his costumes for the PG Tips Commercials. I’m also the puppet wrangler on set. This involved changing his costumes, rigging props to his hands and keeping an eye on the monitors while shooting to make sure he looks good in every take.
Johnny Vegas was a pleasure to work with. As you can see he is fiddling with his mobile in-between takes. It was lovely to hear that he went to the same art college as me - I think we are the same age. He studied ceramics. I was elsewhere in the building drawing something or other! He is not only a comedian but a talented potter as well.
Our friend and colleague Sue Beattie is under the table puppeteering Monkey’s arms and Nigel Plaskitt is manipulating his head mouth and body. Ben Miller is the voice of Monkey and is there in spirit as he was always set up just off camera with his scripts and bottle of water. Nigel lip synched to Ben’s voice.
I am on the far right at the top of the steps, being on hand in case Sue and Nigel needed help.
The cameraman is Martin Hawkins, a very well respected talent in the field of TV & film. Although he never did a Monkey commercial with us we have worked on other projects with him and he is a friend.
Note: My Grandmothers Scottie dog on the biscuit tin.

This painting is set in Beryl Cooks old stomping ground - Plymouth Hoe.
I’ve taken a liberty with the setting as the boating pond is in the High Street down the hill, but I like the lighthouse and the sea so I have brought them both together. It also gives me the opportunity to have a sinking ship - my homage to Titanic - and gives a strange juxtaposition from reality and danger on the open waves to people being totally oblivious playing with their toy boats on the pond.

This is self explanatory. I LOVE cake.
The painting is a dream. I couldn’t eat all those cakes as I’m gluten intolerant. On display are all my favourite cakes...Yum! I love the lady in this. She wasn’t based on anyone really but she ended up looking like Bette Midler.

The street performers are Mike and Larry, American puppeteer colleagues who I worked with on a Disney / Spiffy Productions shoot at Elstree Studios called ‘Bunnytown’. I was one of the puppet workshop crew.
The inspiration for this painting was a house in in Douglas, Michigan where we spent a holiday. We rented the house in the background for a week.
Being October it was Halloween and on arrival it was decked out with a graveyard in the front garden and George the Skeleton on the front veranda. I gave him the name George to make him seem more friendly.
Mike & Larry make and perform puppet characters for their local Halloween street parade. The Pumpkin man is a fantastic creation.
There is a reference to Spike Milligan on one of the tomb stones. `I told you I was ill’.
I wasn’t born in the 1960’s but I am still a Goon’s fan.

San Francisco. A holiday destination.
We love staying with our good friends Debbie & Dave Goelz and their family. We met Dave & Debbie originally on a puppeteering job in Cologne in Germany 25 years ago. The TV project was a Jim Henson Production called `The Secret Life of Toys’. On the side of the tram are two of the puppet characters from the programme. `Mew’ the cat toy played by my partner Nigel Plaskitt who is above the mouse with Charlie our Welsh Terrier and Rugby Tiger played by Dave, who is pushing the tram. Ticker, his pet dog, also looks lovingly at Dave.
Note the sinking ship in the bay - something you may spot in other paintings.

This painting is located at the Little Angel Theatre in Islington.
I thought it would be fun if our friends were puppeteering other friends in The Wizard of Oz. On the gantry starting from left to right is Heather Tobias who was the original puppeteer that played Pig In Pipkins, Sue Dacre, Lyn Robertson Bruce, Sue Beattie and Gillie Robic.
The puppets below are played by me as The Scarecrow, Mark Mander as The Tin Man, Daisy Beattie as Dorothy, Charlie as Toto and Nigel Plaskitt as The Cowardly Lion.
Dorothy is carrying her Gucci Bag - what else - and the Yellow Brick Road starts at the cross roads. Take your pick Elstree, Leavesden, Pinewood or Ealing Studios - all places I’ve worked.

Life's a Rollercoaster

Based in the U.S while on holiday and my love of rollercoasters. I’ve just included a few of my friends on the Big Dipper ride. Dave Goelz, Ticker the dog, Debbie Goelz, Me, Nigel Plaskitt, Mike Schwabe & Larry Basgall.
NOTE: The angry Muppet face on the front car.
The other rollercoaster in the back ground has one missing person. Who know’s, did some one fall out??
In most of my paintings you will find a dog. The Scottie on Larry’s Yellow T shirt represents my grandmothers Scottish Terrier `Jock’. Wherever we are on holiday we always take the opportunity to go to a theme park.

This painting depicts an event I witnessed outside my window.
A lady traveling in a disability car down the centre of the road had no care in the world taking her dog for a walk. Unfortunately she had a long string of traffic trailing behind her which she hadn’t noticed . It brought a smile to my face.
The Welsh terrier is actually our very much loved pooch `Charlie’.

Blue Clouds
Print Size 55.5cm x 50.5cm £155 Limited Edition 395
Print Size approx A3 £45. Open Edition
This painting is a mix of eras. On the left modern day and on the right Second World War. The image refers to my Dyslexia.
When I was a kid back in the 1970’s my school teacher asked me why the clouds in my paintings were blue. As far as I was concerned clouds were blue. At age six I saw clouds as blue and the sky was white in between. Perhaps this was my dyslexia - so for this painting I’m sticking to blue clouds - much more sensible.
At the same age I asked my grandmother when her life turned from black and white into colour. She looked bemused but as far as I was concerned, after being shown black and white photos and movies of the 1940’s, I didn’t think the world in colour existed then.
The painting on the stairs is a watercolour my grandmother left me. It reminds me a little of Beatrix Potters Hill Top Farm.
The time on the gentleman’s wristwatch is 3pm. I used to always clock watch when I was at school in the hope that it was time to go home. I would wait for the bell to ring but unfortunately, in my case, home time wasn’t till 4pm. Wishful thinking!
Charlie, our welsh Terrier, is also relieved to get outside.
Note the scary eyes under the floor boards.

Charlie the welsh terrier has also decided to do his maiden flight sitting in the cockpit.

Daily Male
Print Size 74cm x 55cm £180 Limited Edition 395
Print Size approx A3 £45. Open Edition
This picture is much more in the Beryl Cook spirit.
This picture depicts what woman have to deal with on a daily basis with certain men ogling them on the London tube train. The scene in set on the Northern Line in the 1980’s hence the strange green ‘light bulb’ grab handles and the cigarette butts on the floor.
Although my journey was actually in the 2010’s I used to go in to London to Camden Town to work at The Jim Henson’s Creature Shop - it now unfortunately no longer exists.
Daily Male is appropriately miss spelt as I am dyslexic.
The Lady at the centre of my picture is based on my friend Sonia Beldom who is actually a TV producer. Pleased to say she has one of these pictures hanging in her living room.

Print Size 54cm x 48cm £155 Limited Edition 395
Print Size approx A3 £45. Open Edition
This painting from left to right are Nigel Plaskitt, Charlie the welsh terrier, Harold and Pauline Williams, two of our dear friends. They are definitely party people.
The fictitious characters they depict found the cruise they were on was a little dull so they decided to go their own way by nicking an inflatable and setting sail to a new destination - and of course a crate of Chateaux Plonk had to go with them. A little bit of history - I do have a family wine to my name. Chateaux Jomain hence the label on the bottle - very expensive!
Don’t worry those aren’t sharks in the back ground just a couple of friendly dolphins.

This picture is dedicated to our Irish builder Pat.The two men in the centre of the picture are both sides of Pat. He had a comedy pair of trousers. Pat refused to wear braces to hold his trousers up so they would constantly slip down - he was always good for ‘the crack’!
Pat was doing some work on our roof. It was a really windy day and I was confronted by Pat who had had his T shirt blown over his head and his trousers nearly down.
Our friend and neighbour Helen is to the left looking on in disgust and I am shut in the house.

This goes back to my life drawing days at art college. I can’t say I used to enjoy it. It's a very odd feeling of being completely embarrassed but also having the tutor breathing down your neck making sure you do everything correctly.
I remember Valarie our head tutor calling me out in-front of the group saying ‘Paul Jomain please take a look at the models breasts again. They are not that size!!!’ Cheers love.

On the departure of the traveling people they very kindly emptied all their toilets onto the village green.

Print Size approx A3 £45. Open Edition
I had this picture in my sketch book for two years. I am really happy how it turned out.
It’s a bit of a shopping list of things associated with good and bad luck hence the title Superstition.
Amongst others - garlic around the window to ward off Vampires, the number 13, walking under a ladder, opening an umbrella indoors, a black cat, a horse shoe hung the wrong way up, a broken mirror, shoes on the table, lucky heather, one Magpie for sorrow, see a penny pick it up all day long you’ll have good luck, 666 the sign of the Devil, never hand someone an open pair of scissors, fingers crossed, touch wood, four leaf clover, break a leg. Perhaps he is an actor from The Scottish Play.

I have been known to sit with ailing bees with a spoon of honey. It’s very gratifying to see them recover and fly away.
